Pass on information on chronic health risk practices between officials and rural populations in towns and villages

Objective : Raise awareness among populations against the risks associated with non-compliance with preventions against chronic transmissible diseases - Sheet 8

Origin of the reflection

Chronic and endemic diseases are a global epidemic: heart disease and stroke (cardiovascular disease), cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes and visual or hearing impairment cause a total of 17 million deaths from year, making it the leading cause of death in the world.

In Cameroon, and mainly in villages, rural areas and slums, chronic diseases plunge people with them into a spiral of impoverishment and undermine the economic development of many localities and countries. About 80% of deaths from chronic diseases in the country are thought to be due to the low or middle income level of rural areas and slums, where the majority of the local population live. These diseases affect men almost as much as women, and a quarter of those who die from them are under the age of 60. If nothing is done, the number of deaths attributable to chronic diseases will increase by 17% by 2025. Despite this extremely bleak picture, we already have scientific knowledge to fight against chronic diseases and prevent them.

and effective and inexpensive measures can be implemented. It is clear that: We have duties towards all citizens of Cameroon and the world, in particular the most vulnerable people, and especially children, to whom the future belongs. In 2020, the rapid progression of chronic diseases, preceded by COVID-19 disease, plagued a greater part of the economy of cities and households, posing a serious threat to the human and local development of the country. These scourges have prompted the organization AGCE to take measures to put in place strategies to respond to these major threats in its groups, associations and undertakes actions to encourage the government to do better by integrating the organization into the preventive fight against local chronic diseases, among the rural populations and the slums of the region. On July 20, 2020, the GSPL-CMT was born. Chronic diseases are today the leading cause of death in Cameroon and in the world, we must act immediately. No single sector of society can face the problem and find solutions on its own, which justifies our current approach.

Steps

The World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that an additional 2% reduction per year in the number of deaths from chronic diseases by the end of 2015 was saving 36 million lives. The WHO report, “Chronic Disease Prevention: A Vital Investment,” presented in October 2005, reveals the scale of the problem and offers a positive approach.

Since July 20, 2020, the organization AGCE through the GSPL-CMT proposes that a global and integrated action will make it possible to make great progress in the fight against chronic diseases, which sows the scene for collaborative awareness against diseases chronic by simplified prevention, easy and quick to set up. To begin with, we sensitize decision-makers to persuade them: that the fight against chronic diseases and the promotion of health deserve to invest more at the local, rural, regional and national levels since resolute action results in significant benefits at a cost reasonable. If 36 million lives were saved over the past ten years, the economic benefit to countries would be enormous!

This sheet is a guide and a practical tool intended for all those who carry out an awareness campaign, whatever their profession and the environment in which they operate: employees of ministries, members of a professional association or of a non-profit organization. government, health professionals, journalists, members of consumer or patient associations, or anyone interested in the subject raised by the AGCE organization.

Although this program concerns the fight against poverty in all its forms in Cameroon and in the countries of Central Africa, chronic diseases and their prevention, the fundamental principles of effective sensitization presented here, can be applied with profit in d 'other areas of health, for example health promotion advocated by the sustainable activities of the GSPL-CMT group.

The results

In 2021, the GSPL-CMT group innovates with the way of carrying out the activities of Preventive Awareness and the Fight against Communicable Diseases (SPLMT), by multiple approaches of prevention and control, which presents two approaches: (1) by a Comprehensive action, i.e. a set of measures aimed at reducing risks in the general population through strategies aimed at people at high risk or already ill can be taught by the government within the framework of '' hire the services of young supervisors and educators.

This involves, for example, combining an increase in taxes on tobacco products, with smoking cessation support services and taxes on unhealthy and environmental pollution with support services. hygiene and sanitation… around twenty experiments in the modernization of collective action in the Coast, West and Center were identified, described and analyzed. (2) Through Integrated Action: measures focused on common risk factors, common to several diseases (smoking, unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle), associated with the treatment of different diseases.

For example, as part of the training, coaches and educators are told to offer a wide range of patients training in self-management - to help them abandon risky behaviors and / or cope. to their illness. From 2021-2026, five (5) challenges relating to the management of change in sick individuals, the most vulnerable people (children, the elderly) are identified in a: "multiple approach to prevention and control. »Finally, the GSPL-CMT group will enable managers and facilitators from the West, Coast, Center, SOUTH, East and North ... to better train themselves in awareness raising techniques for prevention and the fight against communicable diseases by multiple approach of prevention and control, for possible future collaborations with the public.

The videoconference course sessions held by recognized professors invited by the organization to support the GSPL-CMT group, will save nearly 5,000 km of travel time and fatigue through distance training.

The teachings

Some effective and inexpensive measures to apply, such as reducing the amount of salt in processed foods or improving the meals served in school canteens and restaurants, quickly have a beneficial effect on health. 80% of deaths from chronic disease occur in low- and middle-income parts of the country (rural areas and slums), where the majority of the local population live. The GSPL-CMT fights through awareness and prevention to help reduce the impact of this epidemic, which it goes unnoticed and is less and less strong. The self-employment generated by the socio-economic activities of young people in risk areas, will serve in a way, if everything is done well, to raise the level of income of the localities in order to allow them to receive proper treatment.

Chronic diseases and poverty are mutually reinforcing in a vicious circle, they will stop hampering economic development and the poorest will also be less vulnerable if they are more exposed to risks and have less difficulty in accessing health services. During the next (5) five years, the GSPL-CMT will train and sensitize the populations on the management of a small number of known risk factors, the three most important of which are: smoking, an unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle.

These risk factors are increasingly present at the national level. 70% of these risks come from the consumption of foods high in fat and sugar, and sedentary lifestyle in and outside the workplace is increasing. One billion people are obese or overweight - and the measure of the actions of the GSPL-CMT is to immediately sensitize consumers on the dangers of unhealthy diets (high in fat, sugar, smoking, sedentary lifestyle) to instead, doing sport twice a week, and consuming organic would be recommended. Thus, within five years there will probably be more than 26 and a half million healthy inhabitants in 2026.
